Highlighting the difficulties facing stores at present, the British Retail Consortium has revealed that shopper numbers fell in January. According to the organisation, footfall during the 31-day period was 4.6 per cent lower than the same time a year ago.
Out-of-town locations suffered the greatest declines, with 7.2 per cent fewer visitors over the month. These areas were followed by shopping centres and the high street, which suffered falls of 5.2 per cent and 3.3 per cent respectively.
Commenting on the figures, Diane Wehrle, research director at Springboard, said: “Despite an encouraging start following a strong period of Boxing Day sales, the decline in footfall on the high street of 3.3 per cent in January is the largest since 2010 with the severe weather undoubtedly deterring customers from venturing out to shop during a period when they were already stretched from Christmas.”
